In April 1961, there took place what The Bung referred to as an ‘unfortunate episode’, where our illustrious and immortal school hymn, Jailhouse Rock, was requested and played by Radio Luxembourg to a receptive audience of boarders. After the rendition of the tune, to the delight of the students and the chagrin of The Bung, certain young men were summoned to the Head’s office to be told “I have written to your grieving Papa to inform him of your rustication.”  This is the account given by the Sunday Express on the ‘unfortunate episode’.

History does not record what became of Gerald Kennedy, but we know that he was not readmitted to 'Father Carroll's' 'tree lined college', despite his parents' protest at the manifest injustice. We can only hope that he regarded his rustication as a manumission. Why the Bung magnified a 'prank' into a 'slight' beggars belief, and why did he chose the word 'slight', which literally means a display of indifference? The Bung's lack of respect for facts and his ignorance of the usage of English would surely qualify him for a position as a Sunday Express reporter.
